When I began work on the Chinese theatrical feature LEGEND OF THE FOREST in early 2021, I began as I always do by writing thematic material. For LOTF I wanted to explore the many themes of the film to discover what musical ideas, textures, and instruments might be incorporated into the score.

The score would be multi-layered as there were traditional Chinese elements, ethnic elements for the Ewenki people of Mongolia and China as well as large, sweeping orchestral elements.

LOTF is a period piece set in the 1940's and has a large dramatic and multi-generational story. The music would need to capture the emotional and dramatic components of the story.

This is the final demo of the suite of themes I wrote. If you listen to the final orchestral soundtrack recording you will quickly hear many of the themes created for the demo suite that provided the foundation for composing the score.

This is the electronic demo version of the suite of themes. The final score was recorded with a 70-piece orchestra, along with traditional ethnic woodwinds and percussion instruments.
